We're less than 100 days away from the opening of the 65th Session of Dirigo Boys State! For more information about the Dirigo Boys State program, visit www.DirigoBoysState.org
The American Legion’s Dirigo Boys State program is a unique way for young men to learn about the American system of government and politics by participating in a mock governmental system designed to mirror Maine state, county and municipal government. We call it a “Laboratory of Government,” because during the week each young man will have the opportunity to run for and be elected to mock offices ranging from town level (e.g. town council, town moderator) to state constitutional offices (e.g. governor, secretary of state, etc.).
It is an honor to be chosen as a delegate to Dirigo Boys State. Hundreds of rising students are nominated each year by their high school teachers and counselors to be delegates or “citizens” at Boys State. We consider the program not only to be leadership training, but also an opportunity to learn about and to participate in government and politics. In fact, many of our state’s political, business and community leaders attended Dirigo Boys State.
While at Boys State, delegates will be divided into “towns” named after the first Governors of Maine, which make up “counties” named after the first Maine Supreme Court Justices. Delegates are also divided into two political parties from which they will campaign and/or elect town, county, and state officers. By doing so, delegates will learn about government and politics by participating in the process. Each young man will have an opportunity to prepare speeches, compose party platforms, debate current issues, and vote for elected offices.
Towns also compete against each other in softball, basketball, and quizbowl tournaments. Delegates also have the option of working on their town’s flag, writing for the Dirigo Boys State newspaper, or playing in the band.
Most importantly, Boys Staters have the opportunity to hear major policy addresses from some of Maine’s top leaders during the course of the program week, and directly interact with them. Speakers from years past include Governor John Baldacci, Governor Paul LePage, Congressman Mike Michaud, Secretary of State Matt Dunlap, Secretary of State Charles Summers, Speaker of the House Bob Nutting, Senate President Libby Mitchell, and many other municipal, county and state leaders.

We're back on the air! After an extended break, Mike Maberry, Liam Nee and I (along with many other guests) are back on the radio at UMaine. It's never been easier to listen! We're on the radio at WMEB 91.9FM in the Bangor, Maine area, all of our shows stream LIVE online at www.wmeb.fm, and we can be heard on UMaine Campus TV Channel 20 (on-campus residents only) during LIVE broadcasts. Segments and interviews will be periodically posted on our YouTube Channel: www.YouTube.com/RyanCGavin
Here's our schedule for January 2012 through May 2012:
UMaine Late Night on WMEB-FM HD-1, Orono, Maine
The University of Maine's best (and only!) late-night talk/variety show has roots going back to 2006, when Late Night hosts Mike Maberry and Mike Moody got involuntarily transferred from their weekend morning time slot to the now-famous Wednesday night show, and we're still going strong today. At that perfect time in the middle of the week, UMaine Late Night covers everything UMaine, and is still the highest-rated show at WMEB. Featuring great music, the Maine Campus Police Beat, Pirate Tech Update, exciting interviews and more, UMaine Late Night is can't-miss radio.
Tuesdays, LIVE, 10pm to Midnight, Eastern, with hosts Ryan Gavin and Mike Maberry
Wednesdays, LIVE, 10pm to 11pm, Eastern, with hosts Ryan Gavin and Liam Nee
UMaine Top Ten on WMEB-FM HD-1, Orono, Maine
The top ten songs from around the world are featured each week on the UMaine Top Ten countdown with Ryan Gavin and Liam Nee. Along with the ten biggest songs from around the globe, UMaine Top Ten features two "extra" tracks each week - usually a "blast from the past" in music or WMEB history. UMaine's late-night Top Ten countdown on WMEB is a perfect way to wind down the day.
Wednesdays, LIVE, 11pm to Midnight, Eastern, with hosts Ryan Gavin and Liam Nee
Our on-air schedule for May-August 2012 will be posted here as we get closer to the summer. Thanks for listening!

The Internet should be open and free. Period. On January 18th, I was proud to join websites like Wikipedia, Reddit and Google in protesting legislation known as "SOPA" in the U.S. House of Representatives and "PIPA" in the U.S. Senate. This website, along with thousands of others around the globe, went offline for 24 hours, displaying this message: Stop SOPA and PIPA Message
Now that the lights are back on and we're back up online, the fight needs to continue. We need to join together to make sure that any legislation opposing piracy gets the strictest of scrutiny from all parties involved, including you. I support legislation aimed at shutting down sites dedicated to illegal copyright infringement and piracy, but only if that law recognizes and protects the current structure of the web, and does not grant inordinate power to the U.S. Justice Department. As SOPA and PIPA stand currently, the U.S. Attorney General could block any website even accused of linking to content that is suspected of being pirated. These bills are dangerous, and would fundamentally alter the nature of the internet.
For more information about these bills, visit www.Thomas.gov
